The Inspiration:

I’m drawn to reflections--fascinated, perhaps, by how light bouncing off a surface reveals an image that is both familiar and alien. I’m interested in that moment of recognition when an individual shifts from a pre-reflective to self-conscious state and takes stock of their form. I am equally interested in the distortions reflected in the surface of pitted glass, a curved mirror, or meticulously varnished wood, as well as those perceived in the viewer's mind. When I observe a reflection, I often capture it with my camera, as was the case with this image. Fast forward to the fall of ’24: I stumbled upon this image—a perfect subject for a process I was experimenting with that involved blending wet and dry media. I started the painting with an abstract layer of watercolor and formed the image on top with a blend or charcoal, watercolor, and pastels. As the image formed, I responded to and worked with the first layer of color, inviting an element of surprise.

I take orders for a limited number of leather customs. Prices cover design services, communications, leather preparation, and painting. They do not include the leather product. To ensure a smooth process, please read instructions below.

Before placing an order, reach out to me via email (lisa@sageandbluestudio.com) or using the Contact Form on the homepage with the following details:

  • Your name, email, and telephone number.

  • The type of product you want customized: shoes, wallet, coin purse, luggage tag, key chain, etc.

  • Your vision for the design or artwork. Include photos, if applicable.

  • Any questions or concerns you have about the process.

I will respond 24-48 hours after receiving your email. If I am traveling, ill, or unable to respond promptly for any reason, I will post estimated response times on the website.

When I receive your email, I will evaluate the request to ensure that I have the tools to bring your vision to life. At this time, I am only hand painting products and applying rhinestone accents. I plan to add airbrushing to my repertoire in the future.

Once I have determined that the project is a good fit, I will send you a contract that describes the process and timeline.

After the contract is signed, you will be prompted to purchase the customization service and ship the product to me. At that time, please also send the tracking information. I have a limited number of wallets and luggage tags on hand that I sell at cost. Available products will be listed in the services menu.

Once I receive your product/product order, I will notify you and begin sketching out the design. Upon completion, I will send you a hand drawn image for review. A sample sketch is available in the image bank on this page. The timeline for this step will be laid out in the contract. My typical turnaround time is 24-72 hours.

After you have signed off on the design, I will begin working on the customs. This process involves:

  • Removing laces, buckles, etc.

  • Cleaning the product.

  • Using sandpaper and acetone to remove waxes, oils, sealants, etc. to ensure that the paint bonds to the leather .

  • Applying dye, if applicable. I often apply dye on areas that are vulnerable to creasing or wear for an extra layer of protection.

  • Applying paint in thin layers.

  • Applying several layers of top coat to protect the paint.

  • Adding rhinestones, charms, or other bling that was requested and reassembling buckles, laces, etc.

This portion of the process from start to finish can take 2-3 weeks. The estimated timeframe will be detailed in the contract. Customers are notified when the product is ready to be shipped.

Domestic shipping is covered in the cost of the service.
